Explanation

this monument is not so much a place to remember as it is a tribute to a special little person. it is full of symbolism as it has been designed out of a variety of symbols and memories of Maaike-Joyce.

it all starts with the beautiful yellow Graham Thomas stemrose alongside the book as the substitute for a sunflower.                                                                                                            her life is shaped by a book -she loved learning- of which the opening stops at page 23-3. and black because of the tragic way her life stopped. the text on the pages speaks for itself.                                                                                                                                                  nil volentibus arduum: nothing is impossible for those who really want it.
“de Weg” is the reference to a poem from the little book of “the Tao of Poeh” by B. Hoff. the photo was taken during her adolescence.
both cross as sunflower ornaments I found in the same shop in Guadalajara.

the recumbent stone shows the places on the earthmap where she already has been for internship, work, study and dissertation.
the little textblock on the rightside -under the date of birth- shows a handwritten slogan of Maaikje that she declaimed out of the blue on a early Saturdaymorning. I found it very remarkable and asked her to write it down.
the e.mail she received in the morning of the day of the accident also speaks for itself.
the papilio Machaon is the queen butterfly we once saw in a butterfly garden and has been given qualities like richness of colour (human: talented) and a cunning nomad (human: multi explorer).
a butterfly stands for immortality, rebirth and freedom of the human soul.

the logo of this Foundation is the tangible start and future in her name.                              the original by her so beloved little blue grape hyacinths from our own garden have been visited by the local mole(!) and therefore replaced by new ones.
